Beth (played by Natalie Imbruglia) was last seen on Neighbours in 1994 after a two-year stint on Ramsay Street which was plagued with drama. The Channel 5 soap favourite later became the mother of Ned Willis (Ben Hall), who is a regular character on the show but the pair have never been on-screen together. This could all be about to change as the iconic resident could discover she is dying and will need to break the news to her son face-to-face.

The former Ramsay Street resident has been mentioned on several occasions but she hasn’t been a prominent mother figure in Ned’s life.

This is because his father, Brad Willis’ (Scott Michaelson) ex-wife Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou) has stepped into the role.

Though Beth is currently still alive and living somewhere else in Australia but as it has been announced the show is likely to come to an end this year, it’s been reported the writers are trying to bring back from ghosts of the past.

With this in mind and having been at the centre of so much drama during the programme’s early days, bosses could be keen to kill off an iconic character.

Having had an estranged relationship with her son, Beth could be the character they want to do this to as she would have to come back to Erinsborough to try and make amends.

Ned could be shocked to see his mother on Ramsay Street and things could be quite awkward between her and Terese seeing as they have a mutual former lover in Brad.

However, the air could defrost a little when Beth explains she has only weeks left to live and she wanted to be by her son’s side when she died.

Having missed out on so much time with this mother, Ned would try to fight in as much as he could to show her his achievements.

This could allow viewers to take a trip down memory lane as he has been focal to some huge storylines over the past few years.

As the tour of Ramsay Street comes to an end, this could mark the end of the programme and Beth’s demise in a very nostalgic way.

I’d consider it

Natalie Imbruglia

The actress who played Beth between 1992 and 1994, Natalie, has recently spoken out about reprising her role some 28 years after she left.

Speaking in an interview, she said: “I’d consider it, yes.

“I would consider going back, I think it would be lovely to walk through those doors. I mean, I probably won’t recognise anyone – not even my [on screen] son,” she told The Mirror.

Discussing the end of the show, Natalie added: “I think at this point we just thought it was gonna go on forever so, you know, people are petitioning. Here’s hoping they pull it off.

“There’s a character on the show who’s my son! I mean, I think it’d be devastating. What’s going to happen to my son?” she said on Heart Radio.

Viewers will have to wait and see what lies ahead for the show’s future but show bosses have promised fireworks as fans prepare to bid farewell to many beloved characters.

Executive producer, Jason Herbison, said: “We are very proud of everything Neighbours has achieved.

“We see the next few months as being a huge celebration for the show with a bit of everything for viewers. Any ending will be respectful of the past, the present and always open to a future,” he told MediaWeek.

At the moment, no other British broadcaster has decided to pick up the programme on their network, with the finale currently scheduled for the summer.

Celebrities and fans alike have come together to try and save the weekday soap from being axed, with numerous famous faces speaking on television about the show ending.

Most recently, Boyzone’s Keith Duffy and Westlife’s Brian McFadden spoke on 5 News about and pleaded with another network to save the programme.

“If they are all about Jobs Jobs Jobs like they say they are… well, this show employs hundreds if not 1000s of Aussies every single year.”
