Back in 2007, the Silver Surfer made a silver screen appearance. Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer may have banked $131 million at the box office, but admittedly, it wasn’t a great flick. One Slate reviewer described the film as “An off-brand superhero movie, the cinematic equivalent of one of those generic breakfast cereals with a badly drawn squirrel for a mascot.” The Slate reviewer wasn’t wrong. While the movie had all the makings of a superhero flick, there was something just a little bit off about it. Now, the chromed-out superhero is rumored to be getting a chance to redeem himself in a brand new movie. With Disney at the helm, it could be a much better showing.
The acquisition of Fox makes the filmpossible
Back in March 2019, Disneyacquired Fox in a blockbuster deal. Along with several TV networks, a moviestudio and a controlling stake in Hulu, Disney acquired all of the Marvel Foxproperties, including The Silver Surfer. Gaining the rights to the character is onlythe first step in crafting a movie worthy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now that the character, among others, aresafely under the thumb of Kevin Feige, the development of the character canstart. By bringing the Silver Surfer under Disney’s umbrella, he can be weavedinto the MCU, which can only buoy the character’s chances of succeeding on thebig screen.
Kevin Feige seems like he’s onboard
Kevin Feige seems on board with the idea of incorporatingthe Silver Surfer into theMCU. Back in January, Feige responded to Adam McKay’s interest in workingon a film centered around the Silver Surfer. According to Cinema Blend, Feigesaid, “I’ve not gotten a call, but I’veseen Adam tonight and at a number of these awards and he is not only, aseverybody knows, an incredibly smart guy, he is a honest to goodness fan. And,you know, he did a lot of sort of behind-the-scenes help with us on the first Ant-Man film, and have you seen Vice? Little cameo. Little Galactus cameo that wehelped him get. So I look forward to speaking with him more.”
Rumor had it that Fox was developing a script before they were absorbed by Disney. It is not known if that script remains in the pipeline, but it’s unlikely. Fox’s Marvel movies were notably different from Disney’s foray into the comic universe. Fox didn’t shy away from R-rated superhero movies, while Disney appears opposed to the idea. While Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer was rated PG, several other Fox properties were not. If the Fox script actually existed, it would likely need substantial edits to fit in with the current MCU vibe.
When could fans expect a Silver Surferfilm?
According to ScreenGeek, the film is in the works, but there has been no officialannouncement regarding the movie. There is no name attached to the rumoredproject, and no stars have been publicly connected to the reported film. If youtake all that into account, fans will likely need to wait a while to see theSilver Surfer take on the silver screen.
Feige was busy at SanDiego Comic-Con announcing everything that Marvel had in store for Phase 4.Any talk of the Silver Surfer was decidedly absent from announcements, so fanswill need to finish Phase 4 before the Silver Surfer film is even aconsideration.
Phase 4 is expected to wrap up in 2021.Anything created after will be a part of Marvel’s Phase 5. Blade,a character that previously belonged to Fox is on the docket to kick off Phase5.
