Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure returned screens on Monday evening to follow Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz Marsland as they establish their farm in the Peak District. During the episode of the BBC One show, Kelvin, 38, hoped he would make a profit selling wool from his sought after flock of sheep. However, he was soon left red-faced when he was called out for making two significant errors.
Former Strictly Come Dancing winner Kelvin lives on his 120-acre farm with his wife Liz and two young children. Liz is currently pregnant with twins.
The couple have zero farming experience but have a dream to run a working farm complete with sheep, pigs and ponies.
In the latest instalment of their BBC show, Kelvin thought he was getting the hang of looking after their flock of Cotswold sheep which he and Liz bought for £900.
Their wool had grown extremely thick and was ready to be sheared off – so Liz and Kelvin hoped they would earn a substantial amount of money from it.
As the shearing got underway, Kelvin was paid a visit from his sheep farming neighbour Jilly who dealt him a crushing blow.
Jilly told Kelvin he’d made a huge mistake by saying: “You did tell the [shearer] not to take the top knot off them right?”
Kelvin, who looked concerned as the sheep were completely bald, replied: “Does that matter?”
Jilly explained: “It does a bit, yes. It’s their crown and glory that forelock as they don’t look like Cotswolds now do they? They look like Welsh mules now, so when you show them I have a better chance [with my sheep].”
Kelvin added: “Word gets around here really quick, it’s your reputation I guess at the end of the day.”
Jilly then told Kelvin he’d made another mistake with the shearing process as the wool was covered in mud and droppings which meant all five of their fleeces were contaminated.
As Kelvin got to work plucking the muck off the wool, he said: “The whole [fleece] is battered with poo.”
So Liz came up with an idea to use a leaf blower in a bid to try and clean off the dirt.
Did the couple do enough to make their wool salvageable to sell to a buyer?
A designer, who wanted to make high-end rugs, called Marie came to inspect the wool the following day, however, she had concerns as some of the fleeces still had sheep droppings on them.
But Maria, who has 25 years of experience in the business, decided to pay £56 per fleece which Kelvin and Liz agreed to.
Kelvin and Liz made a total of £300 from the wool, but they paid £900 for the sheep so they have a long way to go before they start making a profit.
Liz joked that they needed hundreds more sheep in order to make a greater profit in the future.
However, Kelvin replied: “We can’t even look after 10 let alone 500.”
Liz laughed: “We have got to get more sheep, we have got to get you to market.”
Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure airs Mondays at 8.30pm on BBC One.
