Kate Garraway’s Life Stories: Anton Du Beke in ‘powerful’ interview
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway opened up about experiencing “a really life-affirming moment” with her husband Derek Draper.
Speaking on Wednesday’s episode of The One Show about being awarded an MBE earlier this year and bringing Derek along to collect it, Kate shared: “Derek got to go which was amazing.
“He was aware of everything and it was very special. Prince William asked me how Derek was, and I said, ‘He’s here with our nurse,’ and we gave them a wave and it was just a very special thing.
“You don’t realise when you visit that there’s a bit of hanging around, but it’s in the most beautiful setting in the world.
“Inside you’re around all these incredible people who are there for doing really good things.”

While she was thrilled Derek could attend the ceremony but life continued as normal for the couple as he had to visit the hospital the following day.

Kate told her social media followers: “Tomorrow Derek is back in hospital and of course the daily struggles go on – but the fact that he was able to be part of Wednesday is to be treasured and can’t thank everyone in the @NHS and all around him who love him for making it possible.”
Derek, a former political advisor, contracted coronavirus in March 2020 and was put into a medically-induced coma after falling critically ill.
He lives at the family home but needs the assistance of carers 24 hours a day as his health continues to suffer.
Kate and Derek, who tied the knot in 2005, share two children, Darcey and Billy.
The Good Morning Britain star has documented Derek’s journey in two documentaries for ITV called, Finding Derek and Caring For Derek, which showed how the virus has impacted his life.
Derek is wheelchair-bound and is learning how to speak, with Kate being one of his primary carers.
The One Show continues on weeknights at 7pm on BBC One.
