Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has been spending quite a bit of time in London lately. That’s because her boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, lives there. The Brit recently spoke about his plans for the holiday season. Will Swift be involved? Let’s find out.
Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift have been dating for years
Swift and Alwyn have been together for quite some time. They were first spotted out together in the spring of 2017. However, as fans of her music can attest, it was soon revealed that they’d been seeing each other even longer than that.
Piecing together the lyrics from several tracks, including Reputation‘s “Dress” and Lover‘s “Cruel Summer,” “Lover,” and more, it’s been determined that Swift and Alwyn first met at the Met Gala in 2016. She was with Calvin Harris at the time, and then briefly dated Tom Hiddleston, but she Alwyn remained in touch, seemingly becoming a couple in Sept. 2016.
They refuse to talk about each other in interviews
Though fans are very interested in learning everything they can about the pair, Alwyn and Swift are determined to keep certain things private. In fact, they’ve even refused to speak one another’s names when asked in interviews.
During press for Lover, Swift spoke about this, saying “our relationship isn’t up for discussion.” She elaborated, “That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable.”

Because they don’t speak about their relationship — or really, acknowledge it at all, beyond what they’re forced to — Alwyn and Swift aren’t ever photographed on red carpets together. However, they’re still there to support the other whenever possible.
Case in point: Alwyn was spotted at the premiere of Swift’s new film, Cats, on Dec. 16, 2019. While she walked the carpet solo and did press with her castmates, Alwyn was seen inside the theater alongside her family and friends. And they were spotted by paparazzi leaving the premiere.
His new series ‘A Christmas Carol’
Speaking of big acting projects, Alwyn has a major one he’s promoting now. He stars in FX’s new miniseries adaptation of A Christmas Carol, which airs in full (all three episodes) on Dec. 19, 2019, on the U.S. network.
Alwyn portrays Bob Crachit, the mistreated worker of Ebenezer Scrooge (portayed by Guy Pearce). Also appearing in the show are Andy Serkis, Charlotte Riley, and Tom Hardy. From the trailer above, it appears to be a much darker, more dramatic interpretation of the classic tale than we’re used to seeing.
How are Alwyn and Swift spending the holidays?
Given the subject matter of the show, it was natural for Alwyn to be asked how he’s spending the holiday. “I’ll be in London. With family in London. Probably pretty cold. Doing the same old traditions as every year,” he said on AM2DM. So does that involve Swift?
It’s hard to say. We know that the two spent Thanksgiving together in London. Swift has been reflecting on her childhood in Pennsylvania more recently, with her new song “Christmas Tree Farm.” Would a London Christmas suffice? We’ll have to see.
