HOMER Simpson opened the Emmy Awards last night after the show was slammed for having no host.

Bosses decided the cartoon was a good idea and would get a few laughs following criticism for deciding to run without a host.

Dad-of-three Homer appeared onscreen onstage without his brood, and dressed in a tux at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.

Speaking to an applause from the auditorium, he said: "Thank you, Thank you.

"For those of you out there who are without hope, this has been my impossible dream.

"If it can happen to me, then you……"

But he was suddenly squashed by a falling piano onstage.

Though the audience loved him people at home were not in favour of the lack of host.

One viewer typed on twitter: "Homer is always good but no real host just doesn't work."

Another said: "No host was a bad idea."

And one more said: "They may be saving a lot of money but, the ‘no host ‘ thing for award shows isn’t working!!! 2019 most boring #Emmys since the #WritersStrike 2007"

The ceremony was hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost in 2018 and Stephen Colbert the year before that.

Meanwhile, the Brits cleaned up at the 2019 Emmys with 13 awards as Fleabag, Killing Eve and Black Mirror triumphed.

The 34-year-old was gobsmacked to win for her writing, as a lead actress and for best comedy series at the ceremony, which took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Fleabag also won a fourth gong, for best directing which was picked up by Harry Bradbeer.

Charlie Brooker took to the stage after winning the Outstanding Television Movie for Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, while John Oliver – who is from Birmingham – received two awards for his show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

Also flying the flag for Britain was Ben Whishaw, who won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role in A Very English Scandal.

Ben, 38, admitted he was hungover in his acceptance speech, before thanking his co-star Hugh Grant.

Hugh, 59, was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie but he lost out to Jharrel Jerome for his work on When They See Us.
