HOLBY City and Casualty fans will be excited to learn they are about to witness another epic crossover – which could spell disaster for the career of Casualty stalwart Charlie Fairhead.
The two BBC medical sister shows are based in the same hospital and viewers love it when the characters switch from one to another.
With that in mind, the writers of Holby and Casualty have promised to start doing them more often.
And the latest will see the former’s popular character Adrian ‘Fletch’ Fletcher cropping up in the next episode of the latter on Saturday as he is asked to advise on Charlie’s mental wellbeing.
Nursing manager Charlie (Derek Thompson) recently returned to work just weeks after losing wife Duffy to dementia, and has not been himself, including becoming reluctant to carry out his hospital duties.
With Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) having been tipped off about it by Charlie’s worried colleague Jacob Masters in last Saturday’s episode, the hospital’s Head of Nursing arranges a meeting with Charlie to discuss recent events.
Although Fletch promises a worried Jacob (Charles Venn) that he will give Charlie whatever support he requires to cope with Duffy's death, the meeting will have terrible consequences when Charlie realises a member of his team has reported him.
When Fletch accidentally lets slip that someone has made a complaint, Charlie will be left believing he's being used as a scapegoat for the understaffed and overworked department.
It emerged last summer that producers of the sister shows were working on an increased commitment to ongoing crossovers.
Series producer, Jane Wallbank, introduced the first major crossover in over a decade in March.
She said: “There is increased and more complex character crossover between the two shows on quite a regular basis now.”
Elsewhere, it was recently announced that John Barrowman will make his Holby City debut as a ruthless recruiter.
Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One, while Holby City airs on Tuesdays at 8pm.
