Back in 2005, Daniel Craig was cast as the new James Bond in Casino Royale, having beaten 22-year-old Henry Cavill in the auditions. The young actor remembered director Martin Campbell telling him he looked a bit chubby when screen testing in a towel during a From Russia with Love scene.
Nevertheless, Cavill took this in his stride and worked hard on his diet and exercise regime. Only a few years later he was cast as the new Superman in Man of Steel and shot to A-list fame.
Since then, the would-be Bond has played an American agent in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and spy villain in Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
Next up he’s playing another spook in Argylle, based on a yet-to-be-released novel by debut author Elly Conway. Both are due to release in 2023.
Argylle will be directed by Matthew Vaughn, who helmed the Kingsman spy movies, which feature tons of Bond influences. In fact, his directorial debut was Layer Cake, which starred a pre-007 Craig.
According to Collider, the filmmaker previously shared: “Henry Cavill, that man was born to play Bond. When you see how he is in this film, I was just like, wow, this guy is everything you’d imagine Bond to have been, or be.”
However, if Cavill is to become Bond, Vaughn doesn’t think he’ll be the one to direct the project.
Vaughn said candidly: “More important, I don’t think the Bond people would touch me with a stick. They don’t like me. You know, to be blunt. I love Bond. It’s obviously a huge influence on me. Argylle… just wait until you see Argylle.”
Nevertheless, the Superman star himself has responded positively to the idea of playing 007, saying repeatedly in interviews that he’d love to chat to the producers.

Cavill is currently the bookies’ favourite to play the next Bond, with odds of 3-1. Although this should be taken with a pinch of salt given that he’s almost 40 and Bond producer Michael G Wilson has admitted they’re looking for an actor in their thirties.
Additionally, the star may be too busy now given that he’s just signed on for more Superman after his cameo in the end credits scene of Black Adam. If not 007, perhaps he’d have time to play a Bond villain instead?
