There was a surprise return to Coronation Street for actress Cait Fitton recently – just weeks after her character Lauren Bolton left the show.
Lauren came into the show as part of the storyline about Max Turner (Paddy Bever) being groomed by a far-right gang. Lauren, the daughter of a gang member, became Max’s girlfriend and her manipulative behaviour helped to draw him into the gang’s influence and helped to normalise their racist views.
After a bomb was found in the Speed Daal van and Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) was stabbed, the police successfully broke up the group. In the aftermath of this, Lauren decided to move to Cornwall with her mother.
Only a few months later and with Max Turner now back in Weatherfield after completing his sentence in a STU, Lauren is back. This time she’s trying to enlist Max’s help in trying to get her dad’s prison sentence reduced. Once more, Max’s life is about to be turned upside down by Lauren Bolton.
For Cait herself, it’s an exciting time. For one thing she’s thrilled to be back in Coronation Street.
‘To get told I was coming back, it was unexpected because Lauren was supposed to be this temporary character that was just a part of the storyline,’ she told us. ‘So when I got told she was coming back, I was so excited, because I can now develop the character more, and we can see her in a different light. So it wasn’t expected at all, but I was so excited to find out the news.’
She explained that her character returns as quite a changed person. ‘I think as human beings ourselves we go through these experiences and it changes us as people; and I think she just wants to be accepted now, she wants to be taken away of what she was known for, or what her dad was known for and she just wants to be herself, but she can’t do that on her own.
‘So that’s why I think the acceptance for Lauren is such a big thing, and to build bridges with people, and she’s willing to show everybody that she has changed, she’ll do whatever she can to show people she’s changed.’
While Cait’s acting career is going brilliantly, she’s also celebrating another milestone, having just achieved a first class degree. She shared the news in her Instagram stories, with a black and white photo of herself smiling happily and the caption: ‘The girl did it. 1st class honours bby. Bring on grad.’
As she looks forward to her graduation and to more filming on Coronation Street, it’s been quite the year for Cait.
