Euphoria fans have noticed a shift in Kat Hernandez during season 2. When Kat was first introduced, she was a meek high school student often belittled by her fellow classmates. However, the first season saw Kat undergo a huge transformation into a confident, boss character. She also started dating her classmate, Ethan. However, it feels like Kat has taken a bit of a backseat in Euphoria Season 2. In a recent episode, she broke up with Ethan and fans weren’t happy with the way she handled things. Kat actor Barbie Ferreira explained the shift in Kat’s journey this season.
Kat’s storylines in ‘Euphoria’ Seasons 1 and 2
Kat’s storyline in the first season of Euphoria revolves around her sexual awakening and gaining confidence in herself. After Kat loses her virginity, her sex tape gets leaked online. When she notices comments from men drooling over her, she decides to become a cam girl.
Kat takes back the power and begins dressing how she wants and taking less crap from those around her. Throughout season 1, she also flirts with her classmate Ethan, and the pair begin dating in the season finale.
Unfortunately, in Euphoria Season 2, Kat quickly loses interest in Ethan. She fantasizes about other men and agonizes over why her feelings have changed toward such a nice guy.
In episode 6, Kat and Ethan finally break up. Kat lies to Ethan and tells him she has a terminal brain disorder. Ethan understands that she is trying to get out of the relationship but won’t admit it. Kat continues to deny everything, and eventually, Ethan is the one to end things.
Barbie Ferreirra explains Kat’s ‘Euphoria’ Season 2 storyline
After Kat undergoes so much growth in the first season, her storyline in Euphoria Season 2 has been somewhat disappointing and confusing for some fans. “Happy for Ethan for leaving the situation cause goodness Kat was being an a**hole,” one Reddit user said of the breakup scene.
“Yeah, they murdered Kats storyline this season,” another fan said. “I think I might dislike her more than Nate at this point(I’m joking)but like what was the point of her breaking up with Ethan like that. It’s seemed so out of character and it’s not justified.”
Rumors have been circulating that a feud between Kat actor Barbie Ferreira and Euphoria director Sam Levinson has caused Kat to get less and less screen time. However, in an interview with The Cut, Ferreira explained Kat’s journey in Euphoria Season 2.
“Kat’s journey this season is a little more internal and a little mysterious to the audience. She is secretly going through a lot of existential crises,” Ferreira said. “She loses her marbles a little bit — just like everyone else in this season. The theme is everyone’s gone a little crazy.”
Will Kat regret her decision to break up with Ethan?
It’s important to remember that Kat, like the other characters in Euphoria Season 2, is only a teenager. It’s not necessarily bad that she lost interest in a guy as good as Ethan, but the way she went about the breakup was not fair to him. Kat wasn’t mature enough to be honest with Ethan.
“Kat acts like how a lot of people are in general,” a fan wrote on Reddit. “She is trying to manipulate and tries to flip things. When I was younger and less mature I’m sure I tried to find a reason to break up besides the main reason of just not wanting to be with them. I’ve even experienced it myself.”
It’s possible that Kat’s journey in Euphoria Season 2 will culminate in her realizing how poorly she treated Ethan. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will get back together, but hopefully, she will earn a lesson and her character will continue to grow.
New episodes of Euphoria air Sundays on HBO and HBO Max at 9 p.m. EST.
