Emmerdale is in the middle of airing its specially-created lockdown episodes, with Wednesday night’s featuring Aaron and Cain Dingle.

The 30-minute long episode was focused on just the two characters, due to filming resuming under socially distance guidelines, and how they were coping with isolating together.

The two men are seen struggling to deal with the breakdown of their relationships, with Cain trying to come to terms with his divorce from Moira and Aaron thrown by a letter Robert has sent him from prison.

It saw emotional conversations between Aaron and Cain as they opened up to each other about how they were feeling that were praised by viewers, as well as ‘relatable’ lockdown scenes including Cain giving in to putting on a face mask, Aaron suggesting beers at 11am and Cain moaning about queuing to get into the supermarket.

But it seems not everyone was for watching scenes that felt a little too close to home during the coronavirus pandemic, with the episode receiving a mixed response from viewers watching at home.

While some loved the relatable content, other viewers stressed that it took away from the ‘escapism’ that usually comes with tuning in to their favourite soaps.

One viewer tweeted: ‘I don’t think they should’ve written the rona/lockdown into Emmerdale. We want an escape from it all, a bit of normality! #Emmerdale.’

Another agreed: ‘not a fan of these social distanced episodes of emmerdale… I have to hear about coronavirus all day I don’t want it in my soaps…’

‘These lockdown episodes are exactly why I think I’d rather the soaps didn’t bother bringing coronavirus into their little worlds. I want escapism, not a half hour of whatever this is #Emmerdale,’ commented one viewer.
