Between Laurel Thomas and Jai Sharma, the pair have walked down the aisle five times. So actors Charlotte Bellamy and Chris Bisson are no stranger to an on-screen Emmerdale wedding.
While there are no scorned exes waiting in the wings to stop the ceremony, there’s still enough chaos within the family to put their special day in jeopardy.
“Sharma drama and trauma,” teases bride-to-be Charlotte. “Laurel’s really trying to keep everything together for Jai.”
“He’s feeling really anxious,” adds Chris. “Jai’s wondering whether Rishi will turn up to see him get married. He really values him, but now they’ve had a big fall out, and the secret is out about who his real dad is, which Jai is still coming to terms with.”
Usually soap weddings mean fights, explosions and the occasional death. But Charlotte reveals a clue which means this one has a lack of stunts.
“I’ve only got one dress,” she says. “I’m not allowed to do anything in it in case I drop my lunch down it.”
For Laurel, Jai is husband number three after Ashley Thomas, who she married twice, and Marlon Dingle. It’s the same for Jai who got wed to Charity Dingle and Megan Macey.
“A lot of other characters have been married more than me, this is my third wedding,” confirms Chris. “I’m in a new suit for the wedding. I’m not recycling the old one that I got married to Megan and Charity in! Don’t tell them, but it was the same suit.”
“I love my dress,” says Charlotte. “But I did love Laurel’s dress when she married Marlon. It was a vintage 50s dress with lace, oh my gosh, it was beautiful. To be honest, all of my dresses have been lovely.
“This one is very vintage, very Laurel, very cute – it’s perfect. It’s a 40s, 50s look. The design team have worked wonders, and the hat is made by a lovely milliner, it finished off the outfit.”
The ceremony begins and Jai’s mum, Georgia, desperately rings Rishi to get him to the church to see their son get married.
Jai and Laurel exchange vows, and Jai deeply regrets Rishi’s absence on the day. As for Jai and Laurel, will things be looking up after tying the knot?
“Well on paper, things always look a bit brighter,” explains Chris. “But you’re never really busy in a soap unless your character’s miserable, or something’s very wrong. There is plenty of Sharma drama to come.”
