Emmerdale fans have theorised there is more than meets the eye when it comes to newcomer Gus.

Gus, played by Alan McKenna, made his way to the village in Wednesday's episode (April 5) and left Marlon and Charity stunned when he was confirmed to be Rhona's ex-husband.

Despite describing Gus as "possibly the worst decision" she's ever made, she agreed to have a catch up with her former flame.

After their first interaction, Gus was heard speaking on the phone to a unknown person insisting he is doing the best he can.

Following the mysterious call, viewers headed straight to social media to suggest there is some darkness to the newcomer.

"Gus was he up to? a baddy probably," penned one viewer.

Another speculated: "Rhona’s ex, there’s always an ulterior motive" as a third fan theorised: "Rhona's ex husband has bad news he's going to die……"

While other fans raised questions over the fact Gus hasn't been mentioned since Rhona first arrived in the village more than two decades ago.

One fan commented: "Ahhh. Another unknown ex comes out of the woodwork #emmerdale".

Another viewer added: "Have the retconned Rhona's backstory history now as never before a mention of this ex husband #Emmerdale."

"#emmerdale Ex husbands/wives and kids seem to spring from nowhere, even when there's been no mention of them before," wrote a third person.

Someone else shared: "Have we ever heard of Rhona's past husband before? or are they now pulling past characters out of thin air with no backstory or no mention? Just re-writing characters pasts?"

While a fifth echoed: "Meet my ex-husband that I have not bthered to mention till now as he would make that 3? 4? times I've been married."

Emmerdale viewers may recognise Gus as he has appeared in several hit shows, including BBC's Happy Valley and ITV's Doc Martin.

His other acting credits include Doctors, EastEnders, The Bill, Waterloo road and Bad Girls.
