Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ) finally agreed to undergo treatment for his breast cancer in tonight’s EastEnders after several weeks of resistance.
Ever since his diagnosis, Stuart has been in denial about the seriousness of his illness – first keeping the truth hidden from wife Rainie (Tanya Franks), and then fleeing from the hospital minutes before an important operation. Now he has been told that the cancer is only getting worse, but even this didn’t change his mind.
This all stems from Stuart’s history with drug addiction, as he became desperate not to succumb to past ways through the painkillers doctors would need to prescribe him. As an alternative, Stuart sought a more holistic approach, meeting up with dodgy salesman Warren who encouraged him to keep relying on the remedies he had been taking for weeks.
But tonight, Stuart’s nan Vi Highway (Gwen Taylor) returned to meet her great-grandson – the baby boy Bernie Taylor has just given birth to for Stuart and Rainie. She was shocked to learn that the baby may not be part of her family after all, as Rainie admitted that Stuart was refusing to deal with his cancer the right way.
With that, Vi vowed to set Stuart straight. He wasn’t convinced by her pep talk, but when Warren arrived and promptly insulted his nan through his dangerous beliefs, Stuart sent the man packing.
It was then that Stuart realised what he had to do – and he raced home to Rainie just as she was accepting that she couldn’t be the little boy’s mum. Stuart declared that he was going to have the surgery he needed after all, for Rainie and for their child.
Rainie and Stuart were overcome with emotion as they bonded with their son, who they named Roland – with the familiar-sounding nickname ‘Roly’ for short – but that’s another story.
As the pair embraced, they were ready to face the future as a family. But will Stuart be okay?
