EastEnders couple Chantelle Atkins (played by Jessica Plummer) and husband Gray (Toby-Alexander Smith) have been at the centre of one of the most hard-hitting storylines of the BBC soap in recent years. As Chantelle has refrained from exposing her abuser, his behaviour has only become more controlling and manipulative. However, with it yet unknown how the plot will come to a head, some soap fans now believe Chantelle will meet a devastating end – here’s why.
WARNING: This article contains sensitive spoilers from EastEnders.
Chantelle and Gray moved into Walford last year to join the Mitch/Baker clan, who were already well-established on the BBC soap.
Despite appearing as a happy family, viewers were soon given insight into Gray’s dark side behind closed doors when he attacked his wife Chantelle.
Over the months to follow, Chantelle continued to suffer horrendous injuries at the hands of Gray but has kept it all hidden.
Chantelle has failed to tell anybody about what she had been going through but informed her husband he needed to go to therapy to sort out his anger issues.

Gray reluctantly agreed and started attending sessions to get to the root cause of his violent behaviour towards his wife.
However, not so long afterwards, the solicitor stopped seeking help and Chantelle remained living in fear when his dangerous side re-emerged.
When Gray decided he wanted to renew his marital vows to Chantelle, the latter later grew concerned and was clearly unsure over the idea.
After sensing her reservations, Gray tricked Chantelle into attending the service at their own house and she went through with the ceremony.

One person who has been suspicious of seemingly-charming Gray is Chantelle’s dad Mitch Baker (Roger Griffiths) – but he has remained none-the-wiser over the truth.
The abuse directed to Chantelle has only worsened since the New Year after the arrival of the Panesar brothers, who the loving mum knows from her teenage years.
Gray became jealous when he realised Chantelle’s friendship with the trio was beginning to resurface and warned her to stay away from the brothers as he did not trust them.
In recent episodes, Gray has become convinced Chantelle has been cheating on him and has upped his efforts to control her every move.

However, one eagle-eyed fan has sparked speculation the popular character might end up being killed off the soap in an upcoming storyline after spotting a clue on actress Jessica Plummer’s social media.
Reddit user Deleteordecay said: “I do feel like they’ll kill her off I’ve said this for a while. The actress removing references to EE on her social media is what made me start thinking this is where the storyline is headed.
“It would be a shame as I like the Chantelle character and I’d like to see how she lives away from Gray and his abuse,” they added.
However, the user noted: “But at the same time 2 women are killed every week in the UK as a result of domestic violence so her being killed by him wouldn’t be that far removed from reality.”

The star also posted a picture back in March which could subtly hint an exit is on the cards.
The snap – which came from a previous photoshoot with InsideSoap magazine – was captioned: “Back in the good old days where I had a job and went to work.”
Although the picture is likely to be a reference to the current coronavirus outbreak, could there be a hidden meaning behind the post?
When the soap returns later this year, will Chantelle be bowing out in a surprise new twist?
