EASTENDERS’ caff has gone green — after BBC bosses hired an “eco consultant” to cut the soap’s carbon emissions.

The environmental expert advises cast and crew on how they can be more environmentally friendly — and only vegetarian meals are now served in Ian Beale’s greasy spoon.

It could also mean a very different kind of Christmas party in the Queen Vic this year — with landlord Mick Carter and co sitting down to a nut roast instead of the traditional turkey.

For the past year, meat consumption on screen has been reduced in the eco drive.

Last night, a source said: “When Ian Beale tucks into a full English at the caff, not a rind of bacon passes his lips.

“Instead, all food now shown on air is vegetarian. This means Quorn sausages and bacon, and some sort of kidney bean concoction for black pudding.

“Like everyone these days, EastEnders’ bosses want to do their bit for the environment and this is all part of a massive ongoing drive to reduce carbon emissions.

"It means less food is wasted as veggie or vegan items can be re-heated — and obviously pigs, cows and sheep aren’t being slaughtered.”

The Walford cafe, now called Kathy’s, has served bacon and sausage baps and meaty fry-ups since the soap began in 1985.
