Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has spoken out about controversial contestant Dan Walker. The BBC Breakfast host has come under fire in recent weeks with some viewers suggesting he shouldn’t still be in the competition. Craig believes Dan is one of the “weaker” celebrity dancers remaining on the show. However, in a recent interview, confessed he can understand why fans have been keeping the presenter in the BBC dance contest.
Craig was recently absent from Strictly Come Dancing after testing positive for Coronavirus.
As a result, guest judge Cynthia Erivo took his place on the judging panel for the two episodes he missed.
While he isolated, Craig watched the show from home, giving him a different perspective of each performer.
“You’re more involved in the celebrity’s story at home,” Craig noted.
He explained: “At work, I’m not as influenced by the VTs or anything because I’m just there to judge that one minute 30 dance and not the actual story that surrounds it.
“Whereas when I was sat at home, you do and then I see why people vote for people like Dan.
“It’s interesting, isn’t it? Because he’s probably one of the weaker dancers out of everyone that is left in this programme but you still feel for him.
“So you sort of invest in that,” the Strictly judge remarked.
Craig admitted watching the programme on the TV at home allowed him to see things in a different light.
The star said: “It’s a totally different sort of experience so I understand now why the audience are given 50 percent of the vote.
“I’m just there to uphold and wave the dance flag professionally, but then the people at home, they’ve invested in the human being themselves and their story and journey throughout it.
“So, I do think it does sway them and I think it’s why it’s good having the audience having 50 percent of the power,” he told The Mirror.
Dan recently addressed the negative comments about his dancing in a post on Twitter, hitting out at his critics.
“Thank you to everyone who is sending lovely messages and enjoying us having fun on #Strictly and to the few who say… ‘Just leave’ ‘Aren’t you ashamed?’ ‘You’re a disgrace’ ‘It’s a fix’ (which I don’t get) or ‘Who is voting for them?’ IT’S A TV SHOW! See you in the [quarter-finals,” he wrote.
The BBC Breakfast star will be taking to the dance floor once again this weekend for Strictly Come Dancing’s quarter-final.
Dan and his professional dance partner Nadiya Bychkova will be performing a Tango to Santa Maria by Gotan Project.
However, he’s currently the favourite to be eliminated next according to bookmakers William Hill.
The star has odds of 4/6 that he’ll leave the BBC dance competition this weekend.
William Hill spokesperson, Rupert Adams, said: “Dan Walker just keeps confounding the judges and amazingly is still yet to feature in a dance-off, but he does look in danger this weekend with him the 4/6 favourite to leave at the quarter-final stage.”
The other celebrity contestants remaining in the competition are AJ Odudu, Rose Ayling-Ellis, John Whaite, and Rhys Stephenson.
Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6:40pm on BBC One.
