Coronation Street legend Sam Aston has poignantly opened up about the grief of losing two unborn children after his wife Briony suffered two devastating miscarriages.
The 30 year old star, who is best known for playing Chesney Brown in the ITV soap accompanied his wife Briony on Tuesday (August 8), as they appeared on Loose Women to discuss the lasting impact of their heartbreaking experience.
Speaking to host Ruth Langsford about the experience, along with panelists Janet Street-Porter, Frankie Bridge and Linda Robson, Sam confessed that he hadn’t initially realised just how common miscarriages were before Briony had suffered the loss of their unborn children.
“I felt a bit naive, because I didn’t realise it was so common,” admitted Sam, before going on to reveal that although he hadn’t understood the physical side of the experience, he had remained a supportive and empathetic rock at his wife’s side.
“I can’t really understand in a way, because it’s not my body that went through it all, but just being there to empathise. I do feel proud that she was able to put it out there, because it opened up a conversation.”
The couple bravely opened up about their loss earlier this year, as Briony revealed her loss in an emotional post on Instagram which revealed she had miscarried twice within the space of just four months.
In the post, the grieving mum shared a series of photos with a pregnancy test that had confirmed she was pregnant, before editing the image with text to change the result to "Not pregnant anymore.”
Now, after coming to terms with her loss, the couple felt it was only right to speak about the experience and support other families who were also struggling with the pain of losing a child.
"It would have been so much harder for me to experience all of that if I hadn't have had other people talk to me before," confessed Briony.
“So other people sharing their stories and talking about their babies that they had lost – made it so much easier for me to grieve the process and carry on and move forward.”
Following the announcement of her loss, Briony also went on to reveal that she had received “hundreds and hundreds” of messages from other women that had suffered a miscarriage in the past and were keen to lend their sympathy and support to the couple.
One thing highlighted by the grieving mum however, was how some people didn’t always know how to speak to someone after a loss, as she recalled an incident in which she had been asked when she was having her next baby, to join her surviving children Sonny and Daisy.
“Unless people know what you’ve been through, they might not know it’s a sensitive topic,” she admitted, while also encouraging people to talk about the loss and help to break the taboo surrounding miscarriage.
According to statistics from baby loss charity Tommy’s around 500 babies were miscarried every single single day in 2021 – yet despite this number and commonality of the heartbreaking experience, women are still reluctant to talk about their loss.
Addressing the taboo of miscarriage during the panel, Linda Robson admitted that she had previously lost a baby too and went through a string of emotions that included asking herself if she and her husband had done something wrong to cause the miscarriage.
Briony then admitted that it was understandable to look for something to blame, but in her case, she had simply accepted that it wasn’t the right time for her to have another baby.
She emotionally admitted: “It’s easy to want to blame something, to try and find a cause, but for me I very much just trusted the process. I guess I just thought this is the way it’s meant to be for me. My babies will come to me at the right time.”
