The lives of several residents of Coronation Street are going to change forever this Christmas when a gun siege takes place. Official soap spoilers have revealed how an unhinged Derek Milligan (played by Craige Els) will snap after months of torment from Gary Windass (Mikey North). In explosive scenes, he will try and get his revenge, but there is a strong chance someone else will beat Derek to it. In perhaps the biggest plot twist of 2019, will Kate Connor (Faye Brooks) return and take Gary’s life?

Having first aired on December 9, 1960, next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the popular ITV soap. 

Because of this, fans are convinced the storyline which will be precedent this festive season will continue into 2020 and pave the way for even more dramatic scenes. 

Discussing possible storylines which could feature in the soap’s future, one wrote: “Gary getting killed for the 60th would be better than Christmas. Leading to several characters having an uneasy Christmas.”

While another said: “I’m going to wind you all up by suggesting Kate Connor should make a brief return to kill Gary ala Anna Windass/Phelan style.

“He took the most from her by killing Rana, even inadvertently, and wrecked her life, she left the street with no idea what he did so a cameo in 2020 to get rid of this awful villain would at least make the ending to the s/l decent,” the continued. 

It comes after Kate left Weatherfield earlier this summer to go travelling with her friend Imogen. 

In a desperate bid to escape from the torment of walking past the place where her fiancé Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia) was crushed to death, Kate said goodbye to Coronation Street. 

But will her time away have healed her or will she return determined to make Gary pay for his actions? 

Viewers will remember how it was Gary who was revealed as the culprit responsible for the Underworld Factory roof collapse which killed Rana. 

He was hired by Carla Connor (Alison King) and Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) to try and fix the roof of the building, but with a tight budget and very little left over funds, Gary cut corners and subsequently made a botched job of the ceiling. 

However, there is a chance another resident’s comeback could inspire Gary to change his ways. 

Fans have been wondering whether the builder’s mum Anna Windass (Debbie Rush) will return to Coronation Street.

She currently lives in Durham where she has started a new life following the horrendous ordeal she was put through by Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre). 

But if word gets out about her son’s behaviour, will she arrive just in time for Christmas to have a stern word with him? 

Should this be the case, she might be the only person who can help him before it’s too late. 

It comes after spoiler images have shown Derek bursting into the Rovers Return and holding Gary at gunpoint. 

But in a twist, Gary manages to lure his captor into Winter Wonderland to avoid the pub guests getting caught in the crossfire.

As for whether this is how Gary leaves this world and enters the next, the actor who plays him spoke to Metro about a potential exit in the future. 

Mikey teased details, saying: “I’ve always said that I’d rather go in a blaze of glory as it were, leaving bodies behind, so I’m happy either way.

“If this does become Gary’s last hurrah, which I hope it doesn’t, then it’s a great story to be involved with.” 

Coronation Street returns tonight at 7.30pm on ITV.
