The Bailey family arrived on Coronation Street earlier this year but ITV soap fans still don’t know much about the head of the family, Aggie (played by Lorna Laidlaw). However, in upcoming scenes viewers will get a glimpse into the matriarch’s past and why she stepped away from her role as a nurse following her brave efforts to save Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill) after he was shot by Derek Milligan (Craig Els) on Christmas Day.

During the Christmas shoot-out, Aggie tried to save Robert having been a former nurse.

Although she was unable to save him, her actions lead to her son James Bailey (Nathan Graham) recommending her for an award for bravery.

Following his recommendation, a reporter for the Weatherfield Gazette turns up and asks Aggie about her time as a nurse.

However, Aggie is reluctant to talk about her past career and why she stopped.

Once the reporter has gone, Aggie opens up to Roy Cropper (David Neilson) about the tragic circumstances surrounding her decision to leave the profession.

She tells him about her patient that died under her watch and how it led her to walk away from her job.

Even though the patient’s death wasn’t her fault, Aggie admits her confidence was shaken to the point she realised she needed to leave.

After opening up to Roy, Aggie speaks to David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) about his wife Shona Ramsey (Julia Goulding).

Despite her condition, Aggie urges David not to give up hope and reassures him the doctors are doing everything they can to save her.

Will Aggie decide to return to nursing following the fallout to the Christmas Day shoot-out?

Meanwhile, Shona remains in hospital after being caught in the crossfire of Gary Windass’ (Mikey North) feud with Derek.

On Boxing Day Shona awoke from seemingly-successful surgery but was rushed to theatre when her condition worsened.

“It might mean the lack of oxygen during surgery had more of an effect than we feared.
