Carol Kirkwood remains a popular fixture of the ‘BBC Breakfast’ line-up, responsible for delivering daily weather forecasts. The Scottish star, 58, who trained at the Met Office before she became a BBC broadcaster, has suffered several unfortunate on-air gaffes during her more than two decades at the corporation. But in a candid interview, she revealed that an ITV rival was the unfortunate victim of a TV blunder that she feared the most.

Carol gave insight into the difficulties of being a live broadcaster and thought back on her own errors of the past.

She claimed that weather presenters often fell foul while trying to pronounce an unlikely tongue twister, where the words “fog and frost” seemed to “always come out as ‘frog’”.

In addition to that, she recalled the moment her necklace broke mid-report and fell down into her top – but fortunately, for the majority of the forecast, she was able to keep her composure.

Carol said: “That’s the kind of thing – in real life if your necklace fell off and it’s down your cleavage, you don’t care less.

“But when you’re on television it’s just the funniest thing ever, so that was a good live gaffe.”

But her biggest fear – apart from unintentionally using foul language on-air – was revealed to have been suffered by a former ‘This Morning’ presenter.

Carol said: “Swearing, I hate to swear on telly or a wardrobe malfunction like Judy Finnigan had, bless her.”

At the National Television Awards in 2001, the ITV star was left red-faced after her dress slipped and exposed her white lacy bra.

Judy and husband Richard Madeley had just gone on-stage to accept an award for their popular morning show when the mishap occurred.

Moments after the pair greeted Amanda Holden and Les Dennis, her top dropped.

Several viewers, including presenter Kate Thornton, admitted to having believed it was “part of her outfit” at first.

As Richard laughed around with viewers, his acceptance speech was cut short when someone ran on to help cover-up his wife, as the audience broke into hysterical laughter.

The hosts cackled about the incident too, before Richard quipped: “One last thing, if you vote for us next year, she’ll show you both of them.”

Carol, who also found the unfortunate blunder amusing, claimed to have pitied the TV star.

She said: “She was unaware of it. I would just die from embarrassment if that happened, so that kind of thing.”
