Carla Connor (Alison King) is back in Coronation Street after some time away to face her demons following her recent demons – and it’s clear that her harrowing battle with psychosis has encouraged her to change her priorities as she makes a huge decision regarding the future of Underworld.
When Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) reveals that Carla is due home,Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) is disheartened and thinks she will have to relinquish her responsibility at the factory. As she announces to the staff that Carla is coming back, there is some trepidation as everyone wonders what the future holds.
Carla arrives back from Carlisle, still vulnerable but in a much better frame of mind. With Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) by her side, she has made some real progress and moves back in to Roy Cropper’s (David Neilson) flat.
A lucid Carla encourages Peter to go to his AA meeting while she heads to the community centre to address her staff. But as she calls a meeting, they are stunned by what she reveals and Peter is just as shocked, wondering if Carla’s condition is causing her to make rash decisions.
When protective Peter talks to Roy about getting power of attorney over Carla’s assets, she is furious with him and points out her decisions are because her illness has made her realise there are some things more important than work and money. She asks for Peter’s support and he agrees to stand by her decision – but Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) is less than impressed to learn that she has gifted her shares in Underworld to the employees.
Later, Carla tentatively approaches Kate (Faye Brookes) and tells her how sorry she is and adds that she should have listened to Gary Windass’ (Mikey North) warning about the roof. Kate dissolves into tears and Carla holds her as they share a forgiving embrace.
Meanwhile, Michelle (Kym Marsh) reckons that Carla could do with something to occupy her time and arranges for her to do some shifts at the bistro. She is thrilled when Carla accepts, to Peter’s delight as he can see that she is on the road to recovery.
But will her more healthy frame of mind remain?
