The Crown: ‘Any family would sue Netflix’ says expert

Camilla Parker Bowles (played by Emerald Fennell), originally Camilla Shand, is first introduced in The Crown in season three which came out last year. Actress Fennell returned once more for to reprise the role of Prince Charles’ (Josh O’Connor) first love. However, season four has been a far tougher watch, as the Prince of Wales is seen getting married to Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin).

Prince Charles and Camilla met at a polo match in 1970 and soon started dating, despite her already being in a relationship with Andrew Parker Bowles (Andrew Buchan).

But the more senior royals didn’t approve of this match as Camilla was known for having other boyfriends and so wasn’t accepting of her marrying the future king.

As a result, Charles was sent abroad with the navy for several months and Camilla ended up marrying Andrew.

This didn’t stop the pair seeing one another though, even when Diana was brought into the mix.

Although there was an age gap of 12 years, Diana was seen as a far more suitable wife for Charles from the royal perspective.

So he and Diana tied the knot in 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral where millions of people from around the world celebrated their matrimony.

But this marriage didn’t stop Charles from seeing Camilla, who he continued to secretly see throughout his marriage to Diana.

In 1995, she famously told the BBC in an exclusive interview: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

Has Camilla Parker Bowles watched The Crown?

There are numerous moments in The Crown which doesn’t paint either Prince Charles or his now-wife Camilla Parker Bowles in the best light.

These include their continuous rendezvous during their marriages whenever Charles and Diana argued, with the former spending a lot of time at Highgrove House so he could be closer to Camilla.

Even prior to the royal wedding, Diana was clearly uncomfortable as Camilla invited her to lunch and talked of personal details she knew about the Prince of Wales.

He even had a bracelet especially made for Camilla just before he was to marry Diana, with their nicknames “Fred and Gladys” engraved on it.

Fans have been left feeling uneasy watching The Crown season four but Camilla reportedly hasn’t shied away from viewing it herself.

Prior to the drama coming out, a friend of the Duchess of Cornwall told Vanity Fair said: “I imagine she’ll be tuning in with a glass of red wine to watch it; she has seen the previous series.

“She has a wonderful sense of humour, and this won’t fuss her in the slightest.

“She has watched it, of course she has, and I believe [Charles] has too.

“I don’t think she has any real issue with it.

“Her feeling is very much ‘Never complain, never explain.’”

If Camilla has watched the previous seasons, then it seems more than likely she would have watched season four of The Crown.

But so far, the Duchess hasn’t discussed her feelings on the show publicly and seems improbable she will do so.

Meanwhile, other members of the royal are reportedly unhappy about the drama, with sources close to the family labelling it as “cruel” and “unfair”.

The Crown is available to watch on Netflix.
