To finish off the decade, British reality shows like Big Brother and Love Island have been named to a list. The reason why isn’t entirely too surprising, given that the shows are always making headlines. However, the shows’ inclusion on the list is very intriguing.

The most complained about UK shows of the decade are revealed

UK communications regulator Ofcom put out a list of the most-complained television episodes of the decade. Topping the list was a 2018 episode of Celebrity Big Brother. People complained about the episode, which chronicled an incident of an alleged assault of houseguest Roxanne Pallet by houseguest Ryan Thomas. Big Brother UK also appeared on the list as well. An episode from 2015 landed it in the top 10.

A 2018 episode of Love Island UK in which Dani Dyer saw a clip of her boyfriend getting back together with his old girlfriend also landed the show on the list.

Tony Close, Ofcom’s Director of Content Standards, told Deadline, “People expect particular standards from TV and radio shows. Quite rightly, they feel passionately about programmes and want to have their say. Ofcom’s job is to hear those views and protect the public from harmful and offensive content. Overwhelmingly, the most contentious programmes of the 2010s were either reality shows – like Love Island, Big Brother and The X Factor – or news and current affairs.”

Why the UK’s ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Love Island’ are in popular in the states

Despite having versions of these reality shows in America, the UK editions of Big Brother and Love Island remain popular here. The revival of Love Island UK gained traction especially this year on social media. The show was even referenced by Zendaya on her hit HBO drama series, Euphoria.

As for Celebrity Big Brother, the series is popular in the states because of the American celebrities that are on the show. Most infamously, Tiffany Pollard (aka New York) brought attention to the show after a viral clip in which she thought one of her houseguests was dead.
