Avengers: Age of Ultron saw the Avengers tasked with destroying one of Tony Stark’s (played by Robert Downy Jr) own creations when the program, Ultron, malfunctions and turns evil, bent on annihilating the human race. While, ultimately, they appeared to succeed, Vision (Paul Bettany) dealing with the last remains of Ultron’s body, the AI could, in fact, still be lying in wait.
One Reddit user, MCKimmyKim explained how two brief moments, one in Avengers: Age of Ultron and another in Spider-Man: Homecoming, point to a possible return for the villain.
Largely, the theory revolves around the subtle introduction of Jocasta, Ultron’s robotic bride in the Marvel comics, and a sighting of what could be an Ultron head actually active and under the control of the program.
“So in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Vision states that in order to stop Ultron he must be completely destroyed with no trace left behind,” the fan noted. “He also states that he does not want to destroy Ultron as he is unique, but that he must be destroyed for the greater good of life.
“I rewatched the movie and caught an easter egg that leads me to believe that Marvel is not finished with this tremendous villain.”

“So in the scene where the Avengers are preparing to go to Sokovia to fight Ultron, Tony goes through a stack of 5 different AI modules, choosing FRIDAY to run his suits now that JARVIS has been implemented into Vision,” the Marvel fan continued.
“The others were Tadashi (An easter egg to the Big Hero 6 character from the comics and the animated film a year prior), Jocasta (The wife of Ultron and an Avenger in her own right), and 2 unknown AI softwares ( One of which has no name at all showing which leads me to believe that this was the AI we now know as KAREN from Spiderman Homecoming) and another that ends in ….IAL. Obviously, the important one here is Jocasta.”
The Reddit user then went on to highlight a moment in Spider-Man: Homecoming when Peter Parker (Tom Holland) comes across an Ultron head.
“When Peter is rifling through the alien tech inside the armoured van, he comes across one of Ultron’s heads with one detail standing out…. the red eyes,” they wrote.
“In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the only time Ultron robots had red eyes was when they were being controlled by Ultron himself.
“When they are in sentry mode, their eyes are blue. Even in the scene where Vision ‘destroys’ Ultron, his eyes are red. This leads me to believe that Vision will be right and ‘Ultron’s evil will spread.’”
The theory also pointed to the fact that, in the comics, Ultron is forced into hiding, going on to create his bride Jocasta based on his own algorithms.
Of course, she doesn’t malfunction in the same way he did, meaning she ends up good, turning on him and joining the Avengers in order to put an end to Ultron for once and for all.

“In Avengers: Age of Ultron, JARVIS outright says that Ultron is malfunctioning and tries, in vain, the reboot Ultron’s program,” the Reddit user said.
“The fact that Vision calls Ultron ‘evil’ when he (a functional variant of Ultron) is neither good nor evil (choosing the side of life over death, instead of Avengers over Ultron) is another indication that Ultron is defective.
“In the comics, Jocasta has the same perception of Ultron and eventually turns on him, joining the Avengers and putting an end to Ultron for good.”
Could Ultron return to the MCU in Phase Four, bringing Jocasta along with him?
If they do arrive back in a future movie, there could be tension as, in the comics, Jocasta falls for Vision, who is happily shacked up with Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) as it stands in the movies.
It would also be interesting to see Ultron come back to continue the impact of Tony’s legacy on the world.
While Ultron is in essence part of Tony’s subconscious gone rogue, it would continue emotionally complex interplay between the good he did during his life and the darker side of Stark Industries’ past.
Fans are currently in limbo between Phase Three and Phase Four following the epic climax of Avengers: Endgame earlier this year.
But could this theory reveal what’s to come for the Avengers when Phase Four gets underway?
