WARNING: SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS ENDGAME AHEAD. Robert Downey Jr bowed out as Iron Man in an incredibly emotional scene during the third act of Avengers Endgame. Told by Doctor Strange that there was only one chance of defeating Thanos, Tony Stark quickly removed the Infinity Stones from the Gauntlet on the Mad Titan, attaching them to his Iron Man. Just before he snapped Thanos out of existence at the cost of his own life, the superhero uttered: “And I am Iron Man.”
However, Avengers Endgame directors The Russo Brothers have revealed that originally Tony didn’t say anything before they tried all kinds of lines.
Speaking at a screening in Washington DC this week, they said: “Tony used to not say anything in that moment.
“And we were in the editing room going, ‘He has to say something. This a character who has lived and died by quips.’ And we just couldn’t, we tried a million different last lines.”
But then Avengers Endgame’s editor realised that the final line of the first Iron Man movie was a perfect fit.
The directors continued: “Thanos was saying ‘I am inevitable.’
“And our editor Jeff Ford, who’s been with us all four movies and is an amazing storyteller, said ‘Why don’t we just go full circle with it and say I am Iron Man.’
“And we’re like, ‘Get the cameras! We have to shoot this tomorrow.’”
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr is set to make a ton of money for Avengers Endgame.
According to the Hollywood Reporter’s source, the Iron Man star made at least $75 million on Avengers Infinity War last year.
Aside from a massive salary, this was also thanks to negotiating a share of backend profits.
Downey Jr is expected to make even more money for Avengers Endgame.
