AN ANTIQUES Roadshow guest's eyes bulged when she learned the true value of a toy passed down by her grandad.

The hit BBC One show, which is presented by Fiona Bruce, was once again back in Aston Hall in Birmingham.

Viewers were introduced to one woman who brought a toy that she had been gifted by her grandad years ago.

The wooden figures depicted characters from children’s favourite The Wind in the Willows.

Antiques expert Hilary Kay was on hand to inspect and value the old toy.

Speaking about the item and its history, she told the woman: "I feel like I have stepped into a scene from Wind in the Willows.

Antiques Roadshow guest gobsmacked by value of family heirloom – a 1780’s silk sampler

"We have got all the characters there and we have got the caravan and a horse. It is absolutely charming.

"They are flat cut wooden characters, beautifully painted and articulated with steel pins so that they can move.

"They are of a type that are made by Telford Toys. Two sisters set up the business."

While the woman initially thought the items would fetch around £100, she was left gobsmacked when she heard its true value.

She concluded: "Thank you for bringing to life that wonderful times in the 20s and 30s on the Thames in Berkshire."
