The truth is now out on Emmerdale. We know that it was Kyle (Huey Quinn) who shot Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) after he walked in on Al and Cain (Jeff Hordley) fighting and picked up the gun to defend his dad.
‘I didn’t want him to get hurt,’ Kyle told his mum, Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson). ‘I fell backwards and the gun went off.’
Meanwhile Cain was in the prison explaining to Moira (Natalie J. Robb) that his plan had been to hide Al’s body, but that had changed when Kerry (Laura Norton) appeared on the scene and saw him wiping the gun.
Before Kerry appeared he’d told Kyle to go home, hide his blood-stained jumper and get changed, and most important tell no one. ‘Just act normal. Don’t cry,’ we saw him tell his son in flashback sequences. ‘You’re going to be the man of the house now. Don’t let me down.’
Kyle told his story to Amy, heartbreakingly using the only comparison he knew to explain what had happened. ‘In the games it’s so easy,’ he said, recalling how you can shoot people with no real bad consequences in video games. ‘I’m the bad guy now, aren’t I?’ he said.
Obviously he’s not the bad guy, and in fact he’s so sweet and innocent that he thought all he had to do was tell the police what had happened and they would let Cain go. As Cain told Moira, ‘He’s a gentle sweet kid. You wouldn’t even know he was my son.’
As strong as Cain’s instinct to protect his son is, Amy’s is equally as strong and she told her son he had to keep quiet. ‘This has to be our secret,’ she told him. promising, ‘I would never let anything happen to you.’
But with Kyle apparently so desperate to get his dad back home again, and with Moira failing to agree to Cain’s demand that she should keep quiet for the sake of the boy, it seems like a secret that can’t be kept quiet for very long.
