All Creatures Great and Small’s Nicholas Ralph on animal co-stars
With the show entering the years of World War II, people were fearful of which characters would be making their exit to fight for the country.
Although Channel 5 viewers saw both James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) and his best friend enlist, it was Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) who left for his military service in the festive special.
Despite his brother, the usually stern Siegfried (played by Samuel West) trying to intervene, Tristan had made his mind up.
After driving him to the station, the duo embraced in a heartwarming hug to say their goodbyes, taking Tristan by surprise after expecting a simple handshake.
Although it’s not only his brother that he’s leaving behind but also his best friend James.

Speaking about the emotional exit on Masterpiece Studio’s podcast, Nicholas revealed there are mixed feelings for James watching Tristan leave.
The actor said: “I think he’s incredibly proud of Tristan at that moment. He has a lot of admiration for him.
“He has admiration for Tristan anyway for various different things. His savviness, how social he is. It’s lovely to see how they help one another out throughout the seasons.”
Nicholas highlighted how viewers have seen Tristan be the person who initially helped James in the early seasons which gradually changed.

“Likewise with the veterinary stuff, James would always be the lead and then Tristan’s started to help James out a little bit. They balance each other out wonderfully.”
When it comes to the residents of Darrowby entering the Second World War, Nicholas confessed that as they’ve already endured WWI, they know what to expect to some extent.
The actor continued: “You learn all about that in school so the realities of war aren’t lost on anyone.
“They aren’t lost on James, so when he sees his best friend, his brother in this madhouse go off.
“It’s a real mixed bag of emotions of pride and admiration but also sadness and just hoping that he sees his best mate again.”
Although there’s not a date confirmed yet for series 4, it’s expected to follow the pattern of previous years with a September release.
