Alison Steadman has opened up about her character in BBC drama Life which is leaving viewers divided. The actress, who is currently playing Gail in the Doctor Foster spin-off, spoke to the BBC about her storyline and explained why it would spark “mixed emotions” from fans.

“It’s good to tell this story, and I think a lot of people at home will recognise that, and know someone in that position,” began the Gavin & Stacey actress.
“And maybe there will be some watching who feel for Henry and say, ‘I think she is being unfair, maybe she should shut up and get on with it, you know she’s had a brilliant life, what is she talking about?’ And that’s their prerogative.”
Alison explained that viewers will be divided by Gail and Henry’s story
Alison continued: “I think so many people will identify with these characters, and they’ll feel for them. Some of the situations are very uncomfortable and may make people squirm.
“And as I say, I think audiences will either side with Gail or Henry, and will be shouting ‘Don’t you say that!’ at the screen. There will be all these mixed emotions, and hopefully audiences will go on journey.”

Spoiler alert! So far in the series, Gail has made the decision to leave her husband Henry, despite his terminal illness, after coming to a realisation that he has been undermining her and holding her back throughout their marriage.
Elsewhere in the drama, it was revealed that Saira (played by Saira Choudhry), who was beginning a relationship with David (Adrian Lester), had in fact been in a relationship with David’s late wife Kelly. The twist in the storyline was revealed as Saira sat down to look at photographs of the previous couple’s time together, leaving episode three on a dramatic cliffhanger.
