Yankees pitcher’s long-awaited return starting to come into focus

Giancarlo Stanton was one of the Yankees’ hottest hitters shortly before he went on the injured list with a left quad strain.

In three games since coming back, he has been ice cold.

Stanton went 0-for-4 Monday with two strikeouts in the Yankees’ 3-1 loss to the Rays. He is now 0-for-12 with eight strikeouts since rejoining the team and heard about it Sunday, with steady boos from the crowd after striking out in his final at-bat.

“He’s been back a couple days. G will be fine,” manager Aaron Boone said. “As long as he’s healthy and starts to get his reps going, he’ll be fine.”

Stanton’s slow start back from the IL has been pronounced as he returned to an offense scuffling as a whole. He had put the Yankees on his back for a stretch in late April through early May, when he had a 12-game hitting streak in which he hit 25-for-52 with six home runs. But he cooled off just before hitting the IL and is still trying to find his groove upon his return.

“It’s fair to say he’s probably dusting off some rust right now,” Boone said. “But as long as he’s healthy, he should round into form here.”

Miguel Andujar went 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season, boosting him to 16-for-53 (.302) over his last 15 games.

“I’ve been consistently getting more at-bats,” Andujar said through an interpreter. “That’s the big difference. I’m seeing more of an opportunity to get in there and play the game.”

Kyle Higashioka caught Jameson Taillon for the first time this season, after Gary Sanchez had been behind the plate for each of his first nine starts. Boone said he opted for Higashioka on Monday because Sanchez caught Saturday and Sunday in Detroit.

“Just felt like give Gary a day today. He’ll likely play the next two, and then Gerrit [Cole] goes the Thursday day game, so [Sanchez] and Higgy will likely split this series,” Boone said.

Higashioka had only caught Taillon once before, in spring training.

A day after committing a pair of errors in one inning against the Tigers, Gleyber Torres was charged with a throwing error in the sixth inning.

Zack Britton (elbow) is scheduled to make the second appearance of his rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Somerset.
