This has led to a few lesser names avoiding the big guns and making it to the final in recent years.
GERWYN PRICE and PETER WRIGHT are having their own little mini battle right now for the World #1 position and the Welshman consolidated his place on top of the pile by beating Wright in the International Darts Open last weekend.
It puts him £40,000 above the Scot in the Order of Merit but a victory at Minehead would see Snakebite Wright top of the rankings for the first time ever.
This is a tournament that Price is yet to win so expect him to come out all guns blazing… But I’m tipping Wright to finally make the ascension to the very top with a tournament victory.
He has made the final three times previously, finally winning his first major in 2017, when ironically he beat Price. Since then he’s picked up six further major titles and I don’t see him stopping any time soon.
His recent record in major finals is hilariously good for someone so decried as a ‘bottler’ in the past (six victories in his last seven) so if he makes it, there’s no reason to believe it wouldn’t become seven wins in eight.
For an outsider bet, look beyond the Premier League stars for two men. ROB CROSS had every right to feel aggrieved at missing out on a place in the Prem, after winning the European Championship last year.
He made the quarter-finals of the last Players Championship event but was unlucky to run into a 104 average from Joe Cullen.
With Voltage being fresh from not travelling to Premier League events every Thursday, I fancy a deep run in the tournament that initially thrust him into the TV Darting world.
Finally, RYAN SEARLE seems on the cusp of making a huge breakthrough in a TV major and with this event just up the road from his hometown of Holcombe Rogus, there’s no better time than now.
Already in 2022 he’s made a Players Championship final and last year made a first TV final.
We saw Luke Humphries almost make a similar leap in this tournament 12 months ago and there’s every chance that Searle does something similar this weekend.
