But he’ll face stiff competition from bidding rivals from Qatar who could table £5bn for United

But Ratcliffe’s statement comes at a time where many questions are circling around football governance, particularly on the eve of the release of the government’s white paper into club ownership.

Britain’s richest man Ratcliffe, 70, is reportedly worth around £13.3bn and was in the running to buy Chelsea last year, tabling a last-minute offer for the London club of £4.25bn. Interestingly he is also a season ticket holder at Stamford Bridge. 

And while he has reportedly hired Wall Street giants JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs to advise him on his bid, if he becomes successful in his bid, the club will not be the first sports team he has had dealings with. 

Ratcliffe currently owns the cycling team INEOS Grenadiers, Ligue 1 side Nice and also once owned Swiss club FC Lausanne-Sport.

Club officials retain a hope that a sale can be finalised by the end of March, with the Glazer family looking to receive between £6bn and £7bn for the club, while starting bids are expected to be around £4bn.
