ROGER FEDERER has no intention of quitting — despite ending the Grand Slam year trophyless.
The Swiss superstar, 38, was stunned at the US Open by world No 78 Grigor Dimitrov, who recovered from a poor start to win a five-set thriller and set up a semi-final with Daniil Medvedev.
Federer was hampered by a back issue towards the end of his debut defeat to the Bulgarian.
And the loss came after suffering Wimbledon final heartbreak to Novak Djokovic earlier this summer.
The world No 3’s last Major came in Australia back in January last year. And time is surely running out to add to his tally of 20 Grand Slams.
Asked about his future, Federer said: “I don’t have a crystal ball, do you? So we never know.
“I still think it’s been a positive season. Disappointing now but I’ll get back up, I’ll be all right.”
Fed admitted earlier this week that playing into his 40s is possible.
He said: “A few years ago I wouldn’t have thought it was.
“But when you feel fully fit like I do, you think you can play forever.
“I haven’t had any major setbacks since I felt my back in Montreal in 2017.
“If I feel like that, I can play more freely, concentrate on my tactics and enjoy off days more.”
Federer reckons the back problem which saw him take a medical time-out before the fifth set was not too serious.
He added: “Physically, yeah, I felt it the whole time. That’s it.”
Last night his fellow Swiss, Belinda Bencic, made the women’s last four after beating Croat Donna Vekic 7-6 6-3.
