NEWCASTLE boss Steve Bruce is plotting a £5million bid for Everton’s forgotten man James McCarthy.
Brucie needs extra options and the Republic of Ireland midfielder, 28, is available for a knock-down fee.
McCarthy is entering the last year of his deal and the Toffees are trying to find a buyer, with Crystal Palace also interested.
But the Toon may try to swoop for the player, who has been hit by injuries.
McCarthy would also fancy a move and a new chance in the Premier League after a frustrating spell on Merseyside.
Bruce is also looking at Brazilian Marrony at Vasco da Gama but Toon would have to pay a huge fee to help his work permit hopes.
The winger, 20, is tipped for a bright future but would struggle to get into the country unless the Geordies offer a large sum, which influences the appeals procedure.
And Newcastle’s hopes of moving out Dwight Gayle are stalling because they pay him too much.
Even a loan move for the striker, 28, is expensive.
Former Crystal Palace ace Gayle impressed on loan for Championship side West Brom last season – chipping in with 24 goals in 41 games.
