LEWIS HAMILTON has opened his heart on his rocky relationship with his dad, admitting: “We lost our father-son bond.”
Britain’s six-time world F1 champ confessed his drive to become the greatest in the sport damaged his rapport with his father, Anthony.
But the Mercedes superstar is now working hard to heal any rift, insisting: “Family is the most important thing in the world.”
Hamilton, 35, was managed by his dad when he started in F1 in 2007.
However, Hamilton Snr was dumped in 2010 which led to the pair not speaking for some time.
And in an emotional Twitter post to his 5.6million followers, Hamilton wrote: “My dad and I haven’t had the easiest of relationships.
"In the search for success we were so immersed in the drive to succeed that we lost sight of what was most important, our relationship.
“The past couple of years we have been growing closer and this winter break I asked dad to visit me so we could spend time together, just us.
“We hadn’t done this before, so to spend some quality time with him has brought me so much happiness.
“You can’t choose your family, but you can make it work no matter your differences.
"They are the ones that will be there when you have nothing.”
Hamilton Snr funded his son’s karting career when he started out as an eight-year-old, until McLaren snapped him up a few years later.
And, together with a picture of the pair strolling on a beach, Hamilton paid his father the ultimate accolade.
He added: “Dad worked so hard to create an opportunity for us as a family and because of him I am where I am today.”
