JUAN MATA has signed a new two-year contract extension at Manchester United with the option of third.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kicked off his summer plans by ensuring the Spanish playmaker, 31, stays at Old Trafford.
Former Chelsea star Mata had been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, but has now committed his future to United.
On his new deal, a thrilled Mata claimed: "It is a real honour to continue to represent this amazing club and our incredible fans.
"I have been at Manchester United for five years and I am proud to call Old Trafford my home.
“I am looking forward to working with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and his fantastic coaching staff.
"The vision they have for the club is truly exciting and I am so happy that I will be a part of that.”
United officials and Mata had been locked in contract negotiations for months – with the Spaniard set to leave on a free at the end of the month.
TRANSFER REVOLUTION
It is thought Mata demanded a pay increase despite earning £140,000-a-week – while also demanding a further two years.
United chiefs were initially only willing to give Mata one more year, but they finally caved in order to keep the fan-favourite around.
Solskjaer is set to kickstart a new youthful revolution at Old Trafford after demanding an overhaul of their transfer policy following their defeat to rivals Manchester City in April.
While the Norwegian has already signed young Swansea speedster Daniel James, he is seemingly willing to keep some veterans around.
United have just released Antonio Valencia, 33, with many feeling the right-back was past his best.
Ashley Young, also 33, has been a target for fans' criticism too.
With so many long-serving players leaving this summer, United decided to keep Mata at Old Trafford.
Barcelona, Newcastle, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce had all shown interest in the midfield maestro.
However, fellow midfielder Paul Pogba – who will pocket a £3.8million "loyalty bonus" – looks set to end his turbulent stay at United, with Zinedine Zidane readying a £90million bid.
