Harry Redknapp's Grand National horse Back On The Lash slashed in betting as punters latch onto football legend's runner

HARRY REDKNAPP'S Grand National horse Back On The Lash has been slashed in the betting after punters latched onto the football legend's runner.

The Martin Keighley-trained nine-year-old is a huge market mover from 66-1 into as short as 25-1.

Back On The Lash was pulled up when last seen in the Cross Country at Cheltenham.

But prior to that he won at Cheltenham on Trials Day in January and finished third and second in his only other runs this season.

Back On The Lash sneaks in the giant 40-runner field as the joint-lowest weight carrying just 10st2lb.

Former Spurs, West Ham and Portsmouth boss Redknapp co-owns the horse with three others.

They all chipped in to buy him from his previous owner in March last year.

Back On The Lash pocketed his new connections just over £18,000 with his January triumph at odds of 6-1 under jockey Sean Bowen.

He showed a liking for extreme trips by seeing off Deise Aba up the Cheltenham hill in a pulsating finish to the 3m6f contest.

The horse has won Redknapp and Co just over £29,000 since they bought him – a healthy return on investment.

But victory in the world's most famous race would be worth £500,000.

Redknapp spoke recently of how much it would mean to him to just have a runner in the Aintree showpiece – which will be off at 5.15pm tomorrow.

He said: "It would be amazing to have a runner in the Grand National. I would love to have a runner.

"It's one of my favourite races.

"This would be my first runner in the National and I would love it.

"I'd love to go out and watch him run. I love racing. It's my big passion."

Redknapp, 76, also told the brilliant tale of how he won a small fortune betting on the National many moons ago.

He said: "The greatest memory I have of the Grand National is my mum, who worked in a cake factory in the East End of London, drawing Foinavon (in 1967) in the sweepstake.

"We sat round the radio listening to the commentary because we didn’t have a TV.

"It was incredible.

"Every horse got to the Foinavon fence, as it’s known now, and fell and Foinavon who was 100 yards behind won and my mum won the sweep.

"It was only a couple of pounds but to us it was a fortune back in those days, so the National is always special."
