Joaquin Phoenix’s speech at the Golden Globes is getting almost as much attention as his award-winning “Joker.”
Phoenix took home the trophy for best actor in a drama, beating stars like Christian Bale and Adam Driver. During his acceptance speech, he trailed off and was bleeped several times, leaving the internet buzzing.
He thanked the HFPA for going vegan before addressing his category-mates.
“To my fellow nominees, we all know there’s no (bleep). It’s like this thing that is created to sell advertisements for the TV show. I’m inspired by you… Some of you I’ve reached out to personally. Some, uh, I’m still a little too intimidated by, even though we share the same agent: Hi, Christian. You’re not here, but uh…” he trailed off. .
Then he acknowledged his partner Rooney Mara in the audience, though he didn’t say more than just her name followed by a muffled pause. He then spoke about the fires in Australia and other issues facing the world today.
“Contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat, but the boat (bleep),” he added. “It’s really nice that so many people have come up and sent their well wishes to Australia, but we have to do more than that, right? … It’s great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives and hope that we can do that. We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards sometimes or back, please.”
Backstage, Phoenix looked surprised to be faced with a room of journalists. “I didn’t know I was coming out here just now,” he said, joking, “they tricked me!”
He then vacillated between visible boredom from questions about his process creating “Joker” (“this is old news”) to friendly quips about how the press corps was treated (“Are you bored? Do they bring you food?”).
But the actor fell into a passionate groove when asked about the Globes’ decision to serve a vegan dinner.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever eaten the food at this ceremony,” said Phoenix. “I thought it was excellent. I was so moved by the decision to make tonight plant-based. It was such an important step.”
Phoenix said he hopes the rest of the awards shows this season follow suit. “Consuming animal products is no longer just a personal choice,” he said, before saying his publicist was signaling it was time to go home. “It is having a drastic, massive consequence on the rest of the world.”
Some fans mocked his speech while others were supportive of the messages he shared.

“I’m sorry if you find Joaquin Phoenix speech awkward but he pointed out hypocrisy, not doing enough and taking private jets for everything. It needed to be said. Period. #GoldenGlobes,” said @_dracarys96.
