GARY NEVILLE selected his all-time Manchester United foreign XI and picked flop Juan Sebastian Veron and Bruno Fernandes – but shunned Paul Pogba.

Sky Sports pundit Neville, 45, was challenged by a fan on Twitter to name a fantasy overseas Red Devils side.

None of the starting team could consist of players from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.

Former Old Trafford right-back Neville caused a stir by picking his old team-mate Veron in the centre of midfield.

The Argentine did win the Premier League with United in 2003 but was far from a hit after arriving from Lazio in 2001 for £28.1million.

After bagging 11 goals in 82 appearances, he was shipped off to Chelsea after just two seasons.

And United fan's were quick to have their say on social media after Veron's shock inclusion in Neville's side.

One tweeted: "Veron? Really?"

Another said: "I'd be tempted to go with Anderson over Veron."

Veron's midfield partner is current United ace Fernandes – who only joined the club in January.

But the 26-year-old made such an impression at the back end of last season he was named United's player of the year.

The former Sporting Lisbon star has netted 16 times in 28 games and captained the side for the first time in the 2-1 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Not everyone was happy to Fernandes, however, one fan said: "Bruno. I was hoping Gary would be a bit more clued up than that!"

A second added: "Majority of games he has been average and of course scored a load of pens – yes he improved a poor United team but he would not be fitting in so many other United teams over the years."

Fernandes' inclusion meant French World Cup winner Pogba missed out on the XI.

One follower said: "no pogba? brace yourself gary for pogba fc fan."

Another asked: "Veron & Fernandes over Pogba? Please substantiate here Gary (10 marks)."

United paid Juventus £89m to bring Pogba back to the club and one supporter commented: "no pobga? Haha! Waste of money init."

Up front Neville paired club legends Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy together.

But there was no room for 1999 Champions League hero and current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Robin van Persie also missed the cut despite firing United to the all-important 20th league title in 2012-13.

Unsurprisingly Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo made the squad on the right of midfield with Carlos Tevez the other wideman selected.

Tevez got the nod despite some calling for the selection of Andrei Kanchelskis – who smashed a hat-trick in the Manchester derby in 1994.

Another debated pick was Neville's call at right-back, his own position, with Brazilian Rafael da Silva chosen.

Some supporters thought former United skipper Antonio Valencia was more deserving of a spot.

One said: "Reckon Valencia was more productive at RB than Rafael?"

Given Neville's disastrous stint managing in LaLiga, another fan joked: "He probably wants to forget about Valencia thou!!"
