FULHAM want Chelsea's Gary Cahill on a six-month loan and will send Timothy Fosu-Mensah back to Manchester United in order to free up space in the squad.

The Sun revealed boss Claudio Ranieri targeted Cahill, 33, to sort out his defence at Craven Cottage after they were recently thumped 4-1 away at Arsenal.

Cahill will be granted a loan for the final months of his contract if a permanent deal cannot be thrashed out but Fulham will first need to free up positions in their squad.

Premier League rules state that clubs can only have a maximum of two loanees from top-flight rivals at any one time.

This means that Fulham are now considering sending either Fosu-Mensah or Arsenal's Calum Chambers back to their respective parent sides, according to the Daily Mail.

Fosu-Mensah, 21, joined the Craven Cottage club on a season-long loan but has been restricted to just nine appearances so far this season.

Cahill, who won the Champions League and two league titles during his glittering career at Stamford Bridge, is looking to leave in order to play regular football.

The 33-year-old was willing to stay if he was picked for enough games in the first half of the season – but he has been limited to one Premier League sub appearance.

Ranieri has shifted to playing three centre-backs recently but is still looking for an experienced centre-back to help guide them towards safety.

Sending Fosu-Mensah back would be the preferred option as Arsenal boss Unai Emery has been told he will NOT be allowed to recall any of the Gunners on-loan stars.

Centre-back Chambers does not have a recall option in his loan to Craven Cottage and bringing him back early would incur a fee.

The 23-year-old has started eight of nine games since Claudio Ranieri took charge, missing the game against Arsenal because of the terms of his deal.
