FULHAM want Chelsea's Gary Cahill on a six-month loan and will send Timothy Fosu-Mensah back to Manchester United in order to free up space in the squad.
The Sun revealed boss Claudio Ranieri targeted Cahill, 33, to sort out his defence at Craven Cottage after they were recently thumped 4-1 away at Arsenal.
Cahill will be granted a loan for the final months of his contract if a permanent deal cannot be thrashed out but Fulham will first need to free up positions in their squad.
Premier League rules state that clubs can only have a maximum of two loanees from top-flight rivals at any one time.
This means that Fulham are now considering sending either Fosu-Mensah or Arsenal's Calum Chambers back to their respective parent sides, according to the Daily Mail.
Fosu-Mensah, 21, joined the Craven Cottage club on a season-long loan but has been restricted to just nine appearances so far this season.
