Former England football captain Bryan Robson was involved in a car crash as he made his way to watch former club Manchester United’s win over Everton on Saturday afternoon.

The 66-year-old United legend was driving his blue £84,000 Mercedes S350d to Old Trafford when he was hit from behind by another vehicle.

The collision caused damage to the boot and bumper of Robson’s car, and police were forced to close a lane whilst debris was cleared from the road at Princes Parkway. Sportsmail understands Robson is fine despite the shock.

Robson, who was heading to the game as part of his role as a club ambassador, could be seen standing on the grass embankment, dressed in official Manchester United suit colours whilst hugging a young boy and chatting to the police.

There appeared to be no injuries occurred during the incident and Robson was later seen at the game, where his former side beat Everton 2-0 to keep up their bid to finish in the Premier League’s top four.

The rear detailing on the car had also appeared to come loose as a result of the incident

An onlooker told The Sun: ‘I didn’t see the other vehicle involved but it looks like his car had been clobbered from the behind.

‘There was quite a lot of damage to the Mercedes and a section of the bumper was hanging off.’

No comment has been made by the Greater Manchester Police, who stated they do not make comments on minor road accidents.

Robson, nicknamed ‘Captain Marvel’ in his playing days, made 470 appearances and scored 103 goals during a glorious 13-year spell with United before going into management with Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United.

He played in three World Cups for the Three Lions in an England career that saw him earn 90 caps and score 26 times for his country – including his 26-second strike against France at the 1982 World Cup, still the fastest World Cup goal scored by an England player.

His last managerial post came as Thailand boss in 2011, and since then has continued his role as an Official Club Ambassador for his former side.
