MARIO GOTZE will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of this season, according to reports.

The German star's contract at Signal Iduna Park expires in six months and the club are willing to offer the possibility of an extension.

Ahead of the winter break, sporting manager Michael Zorc confirmed Borussia Dortmund were in talks with Gotze's father Jurgen.

But according to Bild, there is no chance that he will sign a new deal.

And it means that should he be released at the end of his current deal, he will be available for free in the summer.

That will no doubt put plenty of Premier League clubs on alert to try and snap him up.

He can already discuss and sort a pre-contract agreement should he find a suitor.

Any new club are likely to have to match his current wages, thought to be around £160,000 per week.

Gotze left Dortmund to join Bayern Munich in 2013 and was Germany's hero when he scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina.

Despite winning three Bundesligas, his time at Bayern Munich did not quite go to plan personally and he rejoined Borussia Dortmund in 2016 before being diagnosed with myopathy, a muscular disorder.

This season, though, he has struggled to cement his place in Lucien Favre's side.

Ahead of the winter break, he played 16 games, starting just six, with three goals and one assist to his name.

He has been deployed as the central striker at times in an exciting attack with Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus, Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt.

But the £18m signing of Erling Haaland will limit his opportunities in the side even more.

Still only 27, Gotze would undoubtedly be a strong addition to most sides.

Runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool were previously linked but that move would be unlikely due to the strength of Jurgen Klopp's squad.

Arsenal may be tempted to have another look at the playmaker after he was a reported target last year.
