Outfielder Brandon Nimmo (neck) hasn’t played since May and veteran infielder Jed Lowrie (knee) hasn’t appeared in a game all season, but Mickey Callaway said the two injured players are “getting closer daily.”
The Post reported Thursday that Nimmo could start a minor league rehab assignment at some point this week.
“We still don’t have a time frame on when they’re actually going to leave on a rehab assignment or exactly what they’re going to do from day to day, other than their plan that we set forth to accomplish each day,” Callaway said. “But they’re definitely progressing.”
The Nationals avoided a series sweep by the Mets on Sunday, and they are hopeful they also avoided what would be a serious blow to their playoff aspirations.
Rising star outfielder Juan Soto left Sunday’s 7-4 win over the Mets with what the team termed a mild sprain of his right ankle.
Soto, whose 24 home runs this season included three in the first two games this weekend at Citi Field, appeared to injure himself while rounding third base on Asdrubal Cabrera’s tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh inning.
The 20-year-old Soto, who broke the same ankle in 2017, left the game after being thrown out while hobbling back to the bag to end the inning. Nats manager Dave Martinez said X-rays came back negative and Soto has been listed as day-to-day.
Righty reliever Brad Brach made his Mets debut and retired the only batter he faced, stranding two runners inherited from Luis Avilan by retiring Brian Dozier on a fly ball to right field to end the sixth inning. The Freehold, N.J. product was signed as a free agent Friday after he was released by the Cubs earlier this month.
Wilson Ramos went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
