Chief executive Peter Lawwell says “no-one can deny” that Celtic deserved to win a ninth title in a row, as manager Neil Lennon declared it an “honour”.

The Parkhead club have completed the feat of nine successive titles – for the second time in their history – after the SPFL ended the season.

With Scotland in lockdown because of coronavirus, Celtic have urged fans not to come to the stadium to celebrate.

“We are champions for a reason,” said Lawwell in an address to supporters.

“Under Neil’s guidance, we have produced performances of the highest quality. We have produced exciting, attacking, winning football. We have played the Celtic way and won the Celtic way.

“Neil and our team have shown such focus and relentlessness, producing phenomenal consistency. I am so proud of our team.

“We dedicate this title to everyone who has cared for us and all those who have been affected by these times of challenge and difficulty.”

Celtic had eight matches left and a 13-point lead over second-place Rangers, who had played a game fewer, when play halted.

Former captain Lennon led Celtic to the first three titles of their current run during his initial stint in charge. And since returning as manager in February last year, he has now helped to deliver the last two.

“Together we have shown that we are a powerful force and once again the best team in the country,” said Lennon.

“It has also been an honour to work with such a special group of players, a squad crammed with talent, spirit, strength and resilience. I love these players – players who do their talking on the pitch and pride themselves in their professionalism.

“We would have loved to play out the season in front of you, it is what we all wanted. However, do not in any way let this detract from our achievement. While many will seek to challenge us, the title is ours and we deserve it. We are indeed champions for a reason.”

A statement from the club said that while they want Celtic fans worldwide to savour the achievement, safety is the priority and “this means celebrating in our homes. Please do not come to Celtic Park”.
