LEGENDARY darts referee Bruce Spendley has died aged 80.

Spendley made his televised debut in 1979 and worked until 2013 making him one of the longest-serving referees.

Spendley remained a hugely distinctive figure in the sport and was present at every BDO World Championship from 1980 to 1993.

He was conducted in the PDC Hall of Fame in 2013, the day after his last world final.

PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter said: "Bruce was a very popular and respected member of our staff and one of the most experienced referees ever in our sport.

"His distinctive voice was recognised around the world and he was held in high regard by players throughout darts."

In 2013, Phil Taylor dedicated his 16th world title to Spendley after his last match as a referee.

The Stoke hero said after beating Michael van Gerwen: "It was definitely the most special win of my career.

"It was also Bruce Spendley's last match as a referee and he's been around longer than I have.

"I've kissed Bruce more times after winning titles than I've kissed my missus."

Tributes have poured in for Spendley including from Taylor who wrote on Twitter: "Very sad to hear about the passing of a dear Friend and colleague Bruce Spendley thoughts and prayers go to all he leaves behind RIP pal."

The PDC added: "The PDC is saddened to learn that PDC Hall of Fame member and former referee Bruce Spendley has passed away."

Darts fans have also paid their respects with one writing: "A legendary voice in darts. RIP Bruce Spendley."

Another added: RIP Bruce Spendley. Such a legend. Thoughts with his family and friends."
