The MLB rumor mill is getting to Bill Simmons.
Simmons, the Ringer CEO, took umbrage with Friday’s Boston Globe column by Dan Shaughnessy entitled “Face it, Red Sox fans, you are overrating Mookie Betts a bit.”
The Red Sox, currently in a luxury cap crunch, are rumored to be considering a trade of the 27-year-old star outfielder.
A diehard fan who literally wrote the book on the franchise’s curse-ending World Series run, Simmons posted a screenshot of the column, making several notes. First, that the outlet is owned by John Henry, also the principal owner of the team.
Second, Simmons pointed out that “of course,” the column was written by Shaughnessy, a noted Boston sports curmudgeon and contrarian.
“Mookie is good, but he’s not that good,” Shaughnessy wrote of the 2018 MVP, four-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner and three-time Silver Slugger. “He’s not Mike Trout good. He’s certainly not Ted Williams good.”
Simmons wasn’t done expressing his distaste, throwing a “F–k off” at the headline.
Who the Red Sox have to move on to get under the luxury tax threshold remains to be seen, but the Ringer boss isn’t shy about saying who it shouldn’t be.
