Scottish darts hero Alan Soutar has provided a snapshot of the abuse he routinely receives from darts fans as the debate over Gerwyn Price's conduct continues.

Soutar’s run to the last 16, where he was knocked out by Gabriel Clemens, was one of the feel-good stories of this year’s World Championship. The 44-year-old combines playing darts with being a firefighter and guide dog trainer, and has impressed many fans with his composure and conduct on and off the oche.

That hasn’t stopped Soutar from coming in for disgusting abuse on social media, often from fans who have lost money after betting on matches. In a bid to add some context to the debate around Price and the abuse he has been receiving, Soutar posted on a darts fans Facebook page with screen grabs of the awful messages he has been subjected to. One abusive messager even said they wished Soutar dead.

Soutar wrote: “Following on from what’s happened to Gezzy……

“Here is a tiny snap shot (I have an unbelievable amount of these) into how a Fire fighter who protects the community and just happens to play darts on those stages, also gets abused online every event.

“On stage, the vile abuse, even I get is horrendous. It would break a lot of people. It’s not banter that’s for sure.

“Sing about Scotland getting battered as loud as you want……that’s banter!

“I’m a strong character and think they wouldn’t say it to my face, in person, by themselves.

“We win money so deserve this abuse I’ve read. Give your head a wobble! So you lost a £5 bet, he just lost a £100,000 match.”
