PHOENIX, Ariz. — Three children, all under the age of 4, were found dead in a Phoenix home Monday night, according to Phoenix fire officials.

A call initially came in reporting a drowning of three individuals. But the details later changed. Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade later confirmed there were three children who were deceased, but did not provide a cause of death.

The Phoenix Police Department posted a written statement on its Facebook page saying that officers were called to the home at about 7:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 3-year-old boy, 2-year-old girl and a 7-month girl unresponsive.

“Investigators are trying to determine how they died,” police stated. “There are no obvious signs of trauma to the children and so investigators will interview the parents as they try to piece together what caused this tragedy.”

The children’s parents and an adult relative were at the home at the time.

Officers attempted to revive the children but were unsuccessful. The Phoenix Fire Department later pronounced all three children dead at the house. 

Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said the parents reported the children had been sick earlier in the night. 

Fortune said they are not classifying the deaths as a homicide at this point, and it is too early to know  the cause of death. She said there were no obvious signs of trauma. She said the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. 

David Ware, a neighbor, said he initially learned about the potential drownings on a neighborhood Facebook page. 

“Being that I have kids, I wanted to come out and see if it was a dangerous situation that could jeopardize my children,” Ware said. 

Ware said police at the scene didn’t seem “frantic” and figured the area was secure. He said that the area included a landscaping business and he often saw trucks coming in and out. 

“I’ve always just assumed it was an active business,” Ware said. “I’ve never seen children on the property.”
