  • Sophie, Countess of Wessex, will scoop same title the Queen had

Sophie joined the Royal Family when she married Prince Edward in 1999.

Although she has been a full-time working member of the Royal Family, Sophie has often kept a low profile.

However, the recent step back of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle means she is likely to pick up new roles.

Royal expert Phil Dampier told MailOnline: “Prince Edward has kept a very low profile in recent years but his wife, Sophie, has become a star in her own right.

“She is very close to Her Majesty and is a favourite of hers. Recently she has been on several overseas trips and done fantastically well.

“Now that her children are a bit older I think there could be a great role for her to play.”

Sophie may have an increasingly important role as a royal, but she was once refused a request made to the Queen.

When the couple tied the knot, Sophie became the Countess of Wessex.

This is because Prince Edward took on the title of the Earl of Wessex, reportedly by request.

However, Sophie may have not have wanted to take on the name of an Earl’s wife.

Writing in Vanity Fair, royal biographer, Katie Nicholl, claimed the Queen would not allow her to become a Princess.

Katie wrote: “The Countess of Wessex had wanted to be known as Princess Sophie, but the Queen would not allow it.”

  • Meghan Markle: Is she friends with Sophie Countess of Wessex?

As well as being the Countess, the mother-of-two was granted an additional title last year.

In March 2019, Edward was granted the title of the Earldom of Forfar to use when in Scotland.

This meant Sophie received the styling given to his wife and is the Countess of Forfar when in Scotland.

Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will no longer carry out official royal engagements, Sophie and Prince Edward could take on more duties.

However, it is still unlikely the Queen would allow Sophie to take the title of Princess.

It is thought the monarch will one day give Prince Edward the title of the Duke of Edinburgh.

If Edward did take the title, Sophie would then become the Duchess of Edinburgh.
